Leaving the house of Mr. Bui Xuan Phong in the My Phu 2 hamlet, Ms. Thuy Diem and Mr. Son took us to the house of Mr. Le Tan Bo, who turned 69 this year.
She stood up with difficulty as she warmly gestured to us to enter her house. Her name is Le Thi Phuong Lan. She is 57 years old and lives at 30 Yersin, P. 3, Tuy Hoa, Phu Yen.
The Vong Tay Am Centre (The Warm Embrace Centre) was founded with the savings donated by Nguyen Quoc, a former prisoner of Con Dao Islands and acong san fighter. Incarcerated and sentenced to death by the French Nguyen Quoc later escaped and is now devoting his life to disadvantaged children of his home province.
When we arrived at Vo Quoc Phong’s house in Ward 5, Tuy Hoa city, I found it hard to believe that slums and people as poor as this still exist.
She has taught for 6 years since her graduation. During that time, she has received awards for good teacheing at school-level. In 2008 she was awarded at district-level. She has also been successively honored as an excellent union member and excellent district union labour member. Nguyen Thi Sim is a teacher in La Van Cau Elementary school in Dak Buk commune, Tuy Duc district, Dac Nong province.
“I have a dream that one day I will be a good doctor and able cure my grandmother and my father. It’s not easy at all to be a doctor, but I am determined to work as hard as I can and I will make it come true.”
Tuan’s living circumstances are pitiful. In 1978 he joined the army and fought in Cambodia for the Cau Pha battalion, 25 Regiment, 7 Military Zone. I Cambodia he was shot in the head. Lucky to have survived he now suffers form schizophrenia and other severe health problems.
