The largest private power plant in Vietnam attracts the attention of the World's media

The contract signing ceremony

International and domestic media recently reported the contract signing ceremony of the 4,400-megawatt coal-fired plant of ITA Group and its partners from America and China.

The event, held on April 8 in Hanoi, was reported widely across the internet, printed newspapers, radio and television stations. Among those newspapers who reported the story were The Wall Street Journal, Down Jones and Morningstar. On April 3, Reuters also led a story.

ITA Group signed contracts with Black & Veatch, a leading American engineering, consulting and construction corporation, FHDI Co., one of the world’s 50 leading seaport developers, and Power Engineering Consulting Join Stock Company 2 (PECC2)

The total investment capital for the two projects amounts to USD 7.7 billion, including USD 1 billion for the port.

“Upon completion, Kien Luong Thermal Center will be the first large power plant in Vietnam run by the private corporations,” Vietnam News Agency said.

Kien Luong Thermal Center will be constructed in the southern province of Kien Giang along with a deep-sea port on Nam Du Island as a trans-shipment point for coal supplier for the power station, which will consume 10-11 million tons a year.

Vietstock, an online newspaper, commented that the project of ITA indicates the Vietnamese Government’s resolve to open up a “level playing-field” to private sector and public sector to contribute to the country’s economic growth.

Tien Phong said that from 2015 Vietnam is likely to have imported primary and atomic energy. Under the National Electricity Development Plan approved by the Prime Minister until 2015, Kien Luong will turn into one of five coal-fired thermal power centres in the South in order to meet increasing power demands nationwide.
